Reiki

The term Reiki means Universal Life Energy. This life energy is all around us and is what flows through the hands of Reiki practitioners and into the bodies of others. Though similar to the Biblical “laying on of hands”, Reiki is not a religion. Reiki practitioners are simply channels for the healing energy of the universe.

While evidence of Reiki teachings can be found in ancient manuscripts from Japan and Tibet, the origins of Reiki have been lost. Reiki was rediscovered in the mid-19th century by a Christian monk in Japan named Mikao Usui. The story of Usui’s search for secret healing knowledge is that he was once a Principal of a Christian seminary in Kyoto, Japan. When he was asked by students to demonstrate the healing methods used by Jesus, Usui was unable to do so. He then quit his position in the seminary in order to begin a quest to gain this knowledge.

Through a study of Christianity as well as records of ancient cultures, Usui uncovered Sanskrit formulas and symbols which led him to a period of fasting and solitude on the Holy Mountain of Kuriyama. There, through a series of revelations and miracles, Usui’s system of Reiki healing was formed.

The Ethical Principles of Reiki, as developed by Dr Mikao Usui:

  • Just for today do no wrong.
  • Just for today do not anger.
  • Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
  • Earn your living honestly.
  • Show gratitude to everything.
